Congregation Beth-El Zedeck was formed in March 1927 from the merger of two conservative congregations: Beth-El and Congregation Ohev Zedeck. Rabbi Milton Steinberg (1903-1950) served as the congregation's first spiritual leader. Rabbi Steinberg left Beth-El Zedeck in 1933 and was succeeded by Rabbi Elias Charry. Milton Steinberg, American author, philosopher, rabbi, teacher, and theologian, was born in Rochester, NY on November 24, 1903. His father Samuel was born in Seraye, Lithuania and educated at the yeshiva in Volozhin, Lithuania.
